Pros

The ones that are posted between 12 cents and 36 cents+ are a little better paying. I think because "bigger companies" are paying for those (would name the companies, but don't wanna go against the NDA we agreed to).

quick approval, never rejected. May soft block really crappy work? IDK, would probably be challenging to write a response that shitty tbh

If your numbers are low, I would do the lower paying ones, otherwise I feel like the wages are starting to creep up cause of lots of workers avoiding the sh*t ones. So, maybe have some dignity/ self respect if you've been on the "mturk block" for a minute, and only reward this requester with work when they pay well or fairly at least. You know those "big companies" are paying them bank for the research too.

Cons

(in advance, sorry for the repetition. It's a slow day. Figured I'd do a comprehensive review of a requester that's always around (and who's hourly should be lower imo. One of those cases where the better paying hits have been reviewed more imo and the crappier ones which are up a lot more don't get done/ reviewed.... so the numbers are all off)).

In general, historically, these have been and are underpaid. So, I tend to stay away, except for the better paying ones. Often wants writing on a 4-9 cent hit.

The ones that are in the 12 cent to 35 cent range pay a better hourly usually, as I noted above. Still I would say across all the hits this requester posts, it's about a 6/ hr average.

time reflects an urge to balance hourly out.

Advice to Requester

Pay fairly. I can't believe someone else hasn't stolen your business. You're doing work for giant companies at times. Just feel like long term you would have such better data to give to those giant companies and make them happier if you paid better, which would in turn probably get you more business.

Annnnnd, it might better insulate you from competition, which right now, I think you are really vulnerable to.

All someone has to do is point out how weak the quality of your data is due to your low wages, and everything you've touched is then called into question.

Quit tempting me to be that person. I'm sure some others feel that way (with so many incompetent people on the other end of these surveys, etc). Amazing the kind of experience one can gain on mturk. So, what happens when the people crowdsourcing are actually becoming more adept than private sector workers and academics when it comes to administering surveys?? hmmmm. Fun thought for the day. Maybe I'll put this degree to work one day after all.

Cons

PickFu is such trash these days. I barely ever do them (usually just the better paying ones), but I get if you have less access to work, you might do them more, especially to get numbers up.

Even the better paying ones usually require quite a bit of writing.

Plus, some of these force you to answer more qual type Q's after the main task (which, yes, does get you more access to hits), but it's gotten quite ridiculous. Like this task took me just under 2 minutes for the main task, but then when I was on the submit screen (with the additional Q's), I had to spend over 1.5 minutes on some other qual type Q's. Literally had to check 30 boxes and answer 5 more Q's in that section before it would let me submit.

I understand the urge to do these because they are always around, but for the ones that are really underpaid, I ask other workers to throw them back/ avoid them, like I do. I feel like they stopped getting as many responses for a while, or the quality of responses went down, so that may be the reason that they do raise what they are paying occasionally. They are making bank off these, so it would be great if they shared a littttttttle more of that cheddar, especially for good writing responses.

Advice to Requester

Quit being cheap please.

$11.42 / hour

Pros

At least they approve fast, and they're always posting hits, even if those hits aren't necessarily that well paid and generally pretty tedious. I'd avoid unless you really enjoy writing and need those numbers.

Cons

The "one question" in the title is an outright lie. It's 28 individual writing prompts all related to a single product asking you to explain why you like image A more than you like image B.

Wage Aggregate Tracking

This is fairly straightforward: we take the completion time & the reward amount (where available) and calculate the average hourly rate for the task. We then apply that number to a simple range based on US minimum wage standards to color-code the data for easy to digest numerical data.

Color Pay Range (Hourly) Explanation
RED < $7.25 / hr Hourly averages below US Federal minimum wage
ORANGE $7.25 - $10.00 / hr Hourly averages between Federal & highest statewide (CA) minimum wages.
GREEN > $10.00 / hr Hourly averages above all US minimum wage standards

Reward Sentiment

Not all HITs are created equal. Sometimes an hourly wage doesn't convey the full story of a HIT's true worth, so we encourage workers to give their opinion on the overall pay of the task. Was it $8/hr to rate pictures of puppies? A worker could justifiably bump up the rating a bit for something so adorable. 10 hours locked in Inquisit? Even for $10/hr many workers would appreciate the heads up on such a task. The Pay Sentiment rating helps connect workers beyond the hard data.

Icon Rating Suggested Guidelines
Underpaid 1 / 5
  • Very low or no pay
  • Frustrating work experience
  • Inadequate instructions
Low 2 / 5
  • Below US min-wage ($7.25/hr)
  • No redeeming qualities to make up for pay
Fair 3 / 5
  • Minimum wages for task (consider SE taxes!)
  • Work experience offers nothing to tip the scales in a positive or negative direction
Good 4 / 5
  • Pay is above minimum wage, or compensates better than average for the level of effort required.
  • The overall work experience makes up for borderline wages
Generous 5 / 5
  • Pay is exceptional.
  • Interesting, engaging work or work environment
  • Concise instructions, well designed HIT.

Communication Ratings

Communication is an underrated aspect of mTurk. Clear, concise directions. A fast response to a clarification question or a resolution to a workflow suggestion can all be valuable aspects of interaction between Requesters & Workers and its worth keeping track of. Plus everyone enjoys the peace of mind knowing that if something does go wrong there will be an actual human getting back to you to solve the issue.

Icon Rating Suggested Guidelines
Unacceptable 1 / 5
  • No response at all
  • Rude response without a resolution
Poor 2 / 5
  • Responsive, but unhelpful
  • Required IRB or extra intervention
Acceptable 3 / 5
  • Responded in a reasonable timeframe
  • Resolves issues to a minimum level of satisfaction.
Good 4 / 5
  • Prompt Response
  • Positive resolution
Excellent 5 / 5
  • Prompt response time
  • Friendly & Professional
  • Helpful / Solved Issues
  • Interacts within the community

Approval Time Tracking

This rating is strictly for approval times. Let's face it, no one wants to mix approval time ratings with how fast a Requester rejects a HIT, so we've saved rejection flags for another category. This provides a more straightforward way to know about how long your HIT might sit pending before paying out. The default auto-approval for most MTurk tasks is 3 days, the maximum is 30 days. We've tried to base our ratings around those data-points.

Icon Rating Approval Time
Very Slow 1 / 5 Over 2 weeks
Slow 2 / 5 ~1 - 2 Weeks
Average 3 / 5 ~3 - 7 Days
Fast 4 / 5 ~1 - 3 Days
Very Fast 5 / 5 ~24 hours or less
