Tweak a story to make it implausible - $0.10

Generous

Unrated

Approved

$14.40 / hour

00:00:25 / completion time

Pros

Almost everything this requester posts amounts to a great hourly (hourly posted is kind of an average of the different tasks this requester posts, could be more or less depending on hit type/ speed) that will go up as you do more and more of them or really get the hang of them.

Got a random bonus on one task a while back that took longer to bring the hourly up (according to the message with the bonus). was like 25$ or something.

EDIT: also, all of these batches are kind of related that have been coming up. You're either working on beginnings, middles, or endings of short stories. Kind of interesting. It's funny after doing one batch too, to see one's own work or be making edits on it days later.

Would love to know what exactly is being studied, etc.

Cons

EDIT: Seems like the number of workers just rushing through/ writing gibberish has gone up again, which kind of makes the job of legitimate workers tougher. Guess it's good that the requester knows what's up and is continuing to eliminate those workers. Hope it was fun whoever's out there doing that. These jobs are so great. Really don't get why you would cheat on a batch that already pays super well and risk 100s of rejections and a hard block. 2/20/19

Only a con for people doing shitty work - requester blocks/ gives quals that block workers for poor work. I actually really appreciate this, as it means fewer and fewer workers have access to these great hits as time goes on.

Of course, I sometimes have to correct people's shoddy work in later hits, but I'm fine with that, as long as the requester keeps blocking and removing workers from the pool(s) of eligible workers....

So to the workers out there doing crappy work to make the hourly, which is already great on these, a little higher, keep copy and pasting without doing any work or submitting shit work. PLEASE. I really mean that. Just means more work for me and the other good workers out here.

Also, some tasks have started having 10k minimum (was even a 50k hit minimum qual the other day on one batch, so get those numbers up!

Advice to Requester

Please continue to really get rid of workers just submitting crap, etc. Thanks for paying fairly.

Does the story make sense? - $0.25

Unrated

Unrated

Approved

$13.24 / hour

00:01:08 / completion time

Pros

I really like these HITs. Once you read the instructions and understand what you need to do, these can be done fairly quickly. 1. Read the first part of a short story. 1. Read the second part. 3. Is the second part grammatically correct? 4. Does the second part make sense as the story's ending given part one? Do this 5 times. It's a batch and you can do as many as you want. This HIT was approved the same day.

Cons

She lowered the pay from 30 cents to 25 cents which I thought was not cool. If you're a fast reader/clicker these are kind of fun, otherwise, you may not find these worth your while.

Advice to Requester

When pay rate is fair or good, lowering it will not encourage good workers to keep doing your HITs.

Alexandria Fairness Survey - $1.00

Generous

Unrated

Approved

$41.38 / hour

00:01:27 / completion time

Pros

Simple survey, basically asks how you feel about the pay for the Alexandria hits that you've done.

Clearly an attempt by the requester to bridge the gap in worker to requester communication regarding things like pay sentiment.

Includes an (optional) writing portion at the end so if you feel like the things you're concerned with aren't covered by the basic bubble selections, you are free to write how you feel.

Cons

It's a survey, ewww surveys.
When they ask about your average hourly, they have like 2~3 options for sub minimum wage, yet it caps at $15/hr as the highest choice.

Wage Aggregate Tracking

This is fairly straightforward: we take the completion time & the reward amount (where available) and calculate the average hourly rate for the task. We then apply that number to a simple range based on US minimum wage standards to color-code the data for easy to digest numerical data.

Color Pay Range (Hourly) Explanation
RED < $7.25 / hr Hourly averages below US Federal minimum wage
ORANGE $7.25 - $10.00 / hr Hourly averages between Federal & highest statewide (CA) minimum wages.
GREEN > $10.00 / hr Hourly averages above all US minimum wage standards

Reward Sentiment

Not all HITs are created equal. Sometimes an hourly wage doesn't convey the full story of a HIT's true worth, so we encourage workers to give their opinion on the overall pay of the task. Was it $8/hr to rate pictures of puppies? A worker could justifiably bump up the rating a bit for something so adorable. 10 hours locked in Inquisit? Even for $10/hr many workers would appreciate the heads up on such a task. The Pay Sentiment rating helps connect workers beyond the hard data.

Icon Rating Suggested Guidelines
Underpaid 1 / 5
  • Very low or no pay
  • Frustrating work experience
  • Inadequate instructions
Low 2 / 5
  • Below US min-wage ($7.25/hr)
  • No redeeming qualities to make up for pay
Fair 3 / 5
  • Minimum wages for task (consider SE taxes!)
  • Work experience offers nothing to tip the scales in a positive or negative direction
Good 4 / 5
  • Pay is above minimum wage, or compensates better than average for the level of effort required.
  • The overall work experience makes up for borderline wages
Generous 5 / 5
  • Pay is exceptional.
  • Interesting, engaging work or work environment
  • Concise instructions, well designed HIT.

Communication Ratings

Communication is an underrated aspect of mTurk. Clear, concise directions. A fast response to a clarification question or a resolution to a workflow suggestion can all be valuable aspects of interaction between Requesters & Workers and its worth keeping track of. Plus everyone enjoys the peace of mind knowing that if something does go wrong there will be an actual human getting back to you to solve the issue.

Icon Rating Suggested Guidelines
Unacceptable 1 / 5
  • No response at all
  • Rude response without a resolution
Poor 2 / 5
  • Responsive, but unhelpful
  • Required IRB or extra intervention
Acceptable 3 / 5
  • Responded in a reasonable timeframe
  • Resolves issues to a minimum level of satisfaction.
Good 4 / 5
  • Prompt Response
  • Positive resolution
Excellent 5 / 5
  • Prompt response time
  • Friendly & Professional
  • Helpful / Solved Issues
  • Interacts within the community

Approval Time Tracking

This rating is strictly for approval times. Let's face it, no one wants to mix approval time ratings with how fast a Requester rejects a HIT, so we've saved rejection flags for another category. This provides a more straightforward way to know about how long your HIT might sit pending before paying out. The default auto-approval for most MTurk tasks is 3 days, the maximum is 30 days. We've tried to base our ratings around those data-points.

Icon Rating Approval Time
Very Slow 1 / 5 Over 2 weeks
Slow 2 / 5 ~1 - 2 Weeks
Average 3 / 5 ~3 - 7 Days
Fast 4 / 5 ~1 - 3 Days
Very Fast 5 / 5 ~24 hours or less
